$6,250,000 Awarded in case involving death of 3-year-old child
After a 6 week trial, a Luzerne County jury awarded $6.25 million to Thomas and Lori Readler in a medical malpractice case involving the death of their 3-year-old daughter Lauren Readler. The Readler family was represented by the attorneys at HKQ Law, PC.
The award was entered against Pinnacle Health System of Harrisburg Pa. along with a number of it's affiliates and physician employees. This case involved the failure to properly diagnose and treat a condition known as an "organo-axial rotation of the stomach." If properly diagnosed, this condition can be corrected by simply re-attaching the ligaments that hold the stomach in place to the abdominal wall. In Lauren's case, the failure to properly diagnose this condition and ensure that it was surgically corrected led to a severe gastrointestinal obstruction and stomach perforation, ultimately causing Lauren's untimely death.
On May 20, 2015, the jury award included $3.7 million in wrongful death damages (including loss of future contributions, services, society and comfort Lauren would have provided her family) and $2.5 million in survival damages (including future lost earnings, pain and suffering and loss of life's pleasures). This award was one of the top jury verdicts in Pennsylvania in 2015.
