Case Settled Pre Trial

On March 23, 2012, life changed in an instant for Sara K., of Dallas, PA - a vibrant 18 year-old woman from Luzerne County. Sara was a college freshman on academic scholarship at a small Pittsburgh school, where she was also a talented third baseman on the college softball team.

Sara was a passenger in the front seat of a Subaru, when the driver of that vehicle negligently pulled out from a stop sign in front of the on-coming path of a Ford F-150 pick up truck. The driver of the F-150 was driving under the influence of alcohol when that driver broad-sided the Subaru. It was a high-energy impact that pinned Sara for over 30 minutes between the front passenger door and the center console of the Subaru, and she had to be extricated from the car by mechanical means. She was taken by ambulance to the Emergency Department, then life-flighted to Geisinger, Danville.

Sara’s injuries included right pelvic and sacral fractures, traumatic bladder rupture, and a right hip labral tear. She required several surgeries to repair her injuries, and suffered from depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, social withdrawal and academic issues after the collision.

The case settled pre-trial for $95,000 against the DUI driver of the Ford pick-up truck, who had limited insurance, and $600,000 against the driver of the Subaru in which she was a passenger.
