HKQ Firm News

October 17-23, 2016 is National Estate Planning Awareness Week

HKQ Law Estate Planning LawyersIn 2008, Congress passed a resolution that recognizes the third week of October each year as Estate Planning Week. Over 120 million Americans do not have an up-to-date estate plan in place to protect themselves and their families in the event of accidents, illness, or untimely death.

Estate planning, which includes preparation of Last Will and Testaments, is a strategy that helps ensure your financial security throughout your lifetime and ensures the intended transfer of your property and assets upon passing. It can:

  • Preserve your estate for your loved ones
  • Control the distribution of your assets
  • Designate someone to act on your behalf should you not be able to make your own decisions regarding financial affairs and medical issues
  • Protect your privacy
  • Help reduce Pennsylvania State and Federal estate taxes and provide a plan for payment of death taxes

If you have had any life changes, such as marriage, divorce or a re-marriage, or if you are part of a committed relationship, childbirth or adoption, if someone in your family has recently been designated as special needs, if your children have recently turned 18, if your net worth has changed significantly, or if you have any health issues, or want to put your affairs in order for your loved ones, you should consider updating your plan. If it has been a while since you reviewed your plan, we strongly suggest you take another look, as several laws may have changed since you created your plan. If you do not have an estate plan in place, we urge you to begin the process right away.

The attorneys at HKQ Law can assist you with your estate plan, and guide you with tax planning strategies, including lifetime giving. A little time spent today will make sure that you and your loved ones are well protected. Call us at (800) 760-1529, or visit us online at

As Hourigan, Kluger and Quinn addresses the concerns raised by COVID-19, the health and safety of our clients, employees and friends of the firm remain our top priority.

These are very difficult and scary times and we hope that you and your loved ones are safe and symptom free. We recognize that so many of you are understandably anxious about your health, the economic impact of this pandemic and all of the consequences of social isolation.

We also recognize that many of you are anxious about how the coronavirus is impacting the Court systems, our firm and your cases. Although all of our offices are closed, our firm has remained fully operational and we have initiated procedures that allow all of our attorneys and staff to work remotely from their homes. Each of us and our staff will respond to any emails and calls about your cases as quickly as possible.

Our Federal and State Courts have instituted significant changes in their calendars as a result of the coronavirus. Although most courthouses are closed to the public, and Hearings and Trials will be delayed for some time, there are matters that can proceed telephonically and by video. Despite these changes in the Court calendars, we are working diligently on your cases and are determined to do whatever we possibly can to assure an early and just recovery for you and your loved ones. Even under these difficult circumstances, we believe that "Nobody will work harder for you than we will."

With regard to new potential clients, we are not in a position to have an in-person new client meeting, but we will be conducting these initial meetings via phone. New potential clients should call us for a free telephone consultation at (570) 287-3000.
