October 17-23, 2016 is National Estate Planning Awareness Week
October 17th, 2016
In 2008, Congress passed a resolution that recognizes the third week of October each year as Estate Planning Week. Over 120 million Americans do not have an up-to-date estate plan in place to protect themselves and their families in the event of accidents, illness, or untimely death.
Estate planning, which includes preparation of Last Will and Testaments, is a strategy that helps ensure your financial security throughout your lifetime and ensures the intended transfer of your property and assets upon passing. It can:
- Preserve your estate for your loved ones
- Control the distribution of your assets
- Designate someone to act on your behalf should you not be able to make your own decisions regarding financial affairs and medical issues
- Protect your privacy
- Help reduce Pennsylvania State and Federal estate taxes and provide a plan for payment of death taxes
If you have had any life changes, such as marriage, divorce or a re-marriage, or if you are part of a committed relationship, childbirth or adoption, if someone in your family has recently been designated as special needs, if your children have recently turned 18, if your net worth has changed significantly, or if you have any health issues, or want to put your affairs in order for your loved ones, you should consider updating your plan. If it has been a while since you reviewed your plan, we strongly suggest you take another look, as several laws may have changed since you created your plan. If you do not have an estate plan in place, we urge you to begin the process right away.
