When Irish Eyes are Smiling - Celebrate Safe, Don't Drink and Drive

Attorney Joe QuinnThe tradition of celebrating the tradition of St. Patrick’s Day is right upon us – as Spring is right around the corner, days are getting a little longer, and the weather is starting to improve, thousands of residents in our area will celebrate on Parade Day. At HKQ Law, we urge you to celebrate safely.

Attorney Joseph A. Quinn, Jr. of HKQ Law says, “We urge you to please don’t drink and drive. In 2015, more than 10,000 people died and 290,000 were injured in drunk driving crashes. On average, that is one person every 51 minutes. And, over 28 million people have admitted to driving under the influence. St. Patrick’s Day is a day to celebrate our Irish Heritage. Celebrate safely.”

The highest rate of drunk driving is among 26-29 year olds, (20.7%) and almost one-third of all drivers who have been arrested or convicted of drunk driving are repeat offenders.

Pennsylvania enforces the .08 Per Se Law that states it is illegal to drive with .08 Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC). BAC is the most accurate and measurable gauge of how much alcohol is in someone’s blood. At a .08 BAC level, a driver is 11 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than someone who had nothing to drink. At a .08 BAC, drivers had trouble controlling speed, processing information and reasoning, reduced coordination and inability to track objects, and difficulty steering.

There are a few simple steps you can take to stay safe while celebrating.

Plan ahead. If you are planning on drinking, assign a designated driver to make sure that you and everyone with you arrives home safely. If there is no designated driver, then make sure you have the phone number of a local cab service or shuttle service tucked in your pocket, or UBER installed on your smartphone before you go out. If you are at a hotel, consider staying the night.

If you are hosting a party, be sure to have an area for a “key drop”. Control alcohol consumption and offer non-alcoholic mocktails as an alternative. Provide plenty of food, and avoid very salty foods, which may cause your guests to drink more. Insist that any of your guests that may have over-indulged, stay the night, or have a responsible way home. Do not allow them to drive drunk.

Enjoy the parade, great food, music and company without any interferences. Find family-themed events and celebrate with them.

Above all, celebrate responsibly.
Don’t drink and drive. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

As Hourigan, Kluger and Quinn addresses the concerns raised by COVID-19, the health and safety of our clients, employees and friends of the firm remain our top priority.

These are very difficult and scary times and we hope that you and your loved ones are safe and symptom free. We recognize that so many of you are understandably anxious about your health, the economic impact of this pandemic and all of the consequences of social isolation.

We also recognize that many of you are anxious about how the coronavirus is impacting the Court systems, our firm and your cases. Although all of our offices are closed, our firm has remained fully operational and we have initiated procedures that allow all of our attorneys and staff to work remotely from their homes. Each of us and our staff will respond to any emails and calls about your cases as quickly as possible.

Our Federal and State Courts have instituted significant changes in their calendars as a result of the coronavirus. Although most courthouses are closed to the public, and Hearings and Trials will be delayed for some time, there are matters that can proceed telephonically and by video. Despite these changes in the Court calendars, we are working diligently on your cases and are determined to do whatever we possibly can to assure an early and just recovery for you and your loved ones. Even under these difficult circumstances, we believe that "Nobody will work harder for you than we will."

With regard to new potential clients, we are not in a position to have an in-person new client meeting, but we will be conducting these initial meetings via phone. New potential clients should call us for a free telephone consultation at (570) 287-3000.
