Quarterly Vehicle Safety Watch List Tracks Top 15 Potential Vehicle Defects 2018

(October 4, 2018) The Safety Institute recently published its Quarterly Safety Watch List, which tracks 15 top potential vehicle defects to watch.  The Vehicle Safety Watch List Analytics and NHTSA Enforcement Monitoring Program are sponsored by Ken and Beth Melton, Cobb County, Georgia whose daughter died in a car crash in 2010. Their daughter, Brooke, died after the ignition module of her 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt slipped into accessory position, and she skidded into another vehicle. Documentation showed that General Motors knew about the ignition problem as early as 2001.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recalls and enforcement activities help the public understand potential safety problems, and the Safety Institute’s Analytics and Monitoring Program provides evidence-based data for directing investigatory resources. The program also represents an important step toward identifying potential vehicle defects.

Based on death and injury claims in the Early Warning Reports System to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the following vehicles have been named to the Quarterly Safety Watch List:

1. 2017 Ford Explorer Engine & Engine Cooling Investigation & Recall

2. 2015 Ford Explorer Engine & Engine Cooling Investigation, No Recall

3. 2016 Ford Explorer Engine & Engine Cooling Investigation & Recall

4. 2016 Honda Odyssey Seats No Investigation, But Recall

5. 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Steering No Investigation, But Recall
