Forced Recall of Hazardous Products on Amazon

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) filed a complaint on Wednesday, July 14th, 2021 against Amazon.com, the world’s largest retailer to force Amazon to recall potentially hazardous products that are currently being sold on their platform. The lawsuit was filed to protect American consumers who rely on Amazon for their purchases.

The complaint states that there are specific products that are defective and pose a risk of serious injury or death to consumers and states that Amazon is legally responsible for recalls of these products. Products named include 24,000 faulty carbon monoxide detectors that fail to alarm, several children’s sleepwear garments that fail to meet flammable fabric safety standards, and nearly 400,000 hair dryers sold without immersion protection devices.

The complaint seeks to force Amazon to stop selling these products, work with the CPSC on recalls, and notify consumers who purchased defective products and offer them a full refund.

With online shopping on the rise, the CPSC strongly urges consumers to check www.saferproducts.gov for recalls prior to making purchases. Any accidents or injuries should also be reported to the CPSC.

The CPSC’s responsibility is to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death related to consumer products. CPSC’s work has contributed to a decline in injuries associated with products over the past 40 years. Federal law bars any person from selling products that have been voluntarily recalled by a manufacturer or a mandatory recall by the CPSC.
