Why did you get involved with the United Way?

I have been involved with the United Way and other civic organizations for many years, including the Salvation Army, ARC of Northeastern Pennsylvania, American Red Cross, Jewish Family Services and the Jewish Community Center. I am really following the footsteps of some of my mentors who said I should get involved in the community. I found that I really enjoyed helping others, which is really what being a lawyer is. And you can see how the work benefits the people in the community.

You see a connection between your work as a lawyer and the United Way?

As a lawyer, you do pro bono work, which is when you represent clients who cannot afford it. This goes above and beyond that, but it is still serving the community.

How is it determined where the funds go?

The United Way has 23 member agencies who report what they do. A committee then decides the funding stream, and an allocation committee decides what goes where. Of course, these agencies also do their own fundraising, and this is all done in addition to that.

Has the campaign started?

The campaign really goes on just about all year long. When this campaign is over, its time to get next year's organized. We had an official kickoff day of caring where volunteers went all over town and did work in the community. They painted a homeless shelter and worked at a group home and did some general cleanup and yard work. I was out with them, and it was really great to see.

How is the campaign going?

It is going well. There are many ways people can donate, such as designating a deduction from their paychecks. Also there are various companies that donate and encourage their employees to donate too. We have high goals because the needs are so great.
