LCCC Presenting Re-Creation of Scopes Trial

The Luzerne County Community College Institute of Public Affairs will present a historical re-creation of the Scopes Trial of 1925 titled, "State vs. Scopes," April 17, beginning at 9 a.m., at the U.S. Courthouse on South Main and South streets, Wilkes-Barre.

Often referred to as the "Monkey Trial," the Scopes Trial addressed the issue of teaching evolution in public schools.

John T. Scopes, a public high school teacher in Rhea County, Tenn., was brought to trial in 1925 for teaching the theory of evolution of man in his classes, which was prohibited by a state statute.

The program is based on the actual stenographic record of the trial.

Admission is ongoing throughout the day and the program is free and open to the public.

For more information, contact Fred Walters, director of the LCCC Institute of Public
Affairs at 740-0424 or fwalters@luzerne.edu.
