Standard~Speaker LCCC presenting re-creation of Scopes Trial
The Luzerne County Community College Institute of Public Affairs will present a historical re-creation of the Scopes Trial of 1925 titled, "State vs. Scopes," April 17, beginning at 9 a.m., at the U.S. Courthouse on South Main and South streets, Wilkes-Barre. Often referred to as the "Monkey Trial," the Scopes Trial addressed the issue of teaching evolution in public schools. John T. Scopes, a public high school teacher in Rhea County, Tenn., was brought to trial in 1925 for teaching the theory of evolution of man in his classes, which was prohibited by a state statute. The program is based on the actual stenographic record of the trial. Admission is ongoing throughout the day and the program is free and open to the public.
